Windows XP SP2

Well, I’ve just downloaded a copy of Windows XP Service Pack 2, and installed it without any problems. I downloaded it from the following link:

Windows XP SP2 from Microsoft

The main update is the new ‘Security Manager’ which automatically enables the MS firewall, and persuades you to install Anti-Virus software upon the first boot of the newly patched operating system. This is a great advance, as it asks you to enable auto-updating, rather than relying on novices doing it themselves. It will help the auto-update feature reach as many people as possible.

Another little thing I noticed was that the startup screen is slightly different now. Instead of the standard ‘Windows XP Home Edition’ with a green bar, there is now no ‘Home Edition’, there is a blue bar, and the copyright dates are gone from the lower left hand corner.

It’s a large download, which may put off people not on broadband, however it is well worth the wait. MS are also making the release avaliable on CD for those with slower connections apparently.

Anyway, I’m surprised to be saying this, but so far so good. It seems Microsoft have done most things right this time, although I’m still dubious about Longhorn. All will be revealed……
