I, Robot

Despite the relatively poor press I Robot has had, I decided to go and see it with a few mates today. We went for the 1:45 showing at the Bradford cineworld. I must say, that from the start of the movie I was very impressed. The movie is set in a futuristic America, which is very well crafted. Too many times we have seen futuristic movies that were, well, a little too futuristic (Minority Report springs to mind).

The plot is surprising well scripted, and although the whole robot idea is obviously a little far fetched (let’s face it, it was always going to be), it seems to work very well. It revolves around a new ‘batch’ of robots, which have been built to ignore the main three laws of robots - don’t hurt humans etc. That obviously has the opportunity to create a huge amount of great action. And there is a lot of action.

The whole film culminates in a large showdown between Will Smith (lead role) and the robots. There are several twists at the end, and some pretty clever action. In fact, parts of the action would be (in my opinion) placed on a definite par with the Matrix. There are elements of bullet time, and some great fighting (many scenes are based around Will Smith’s robotic arm!?).

I don’t really imagine there being and scope for a sequel, but I would certainly rate this film, and it is one that I will be buying when it is released on DVD. Mainly for the action scenes, but also for the couple of comedy elements as well.
