Style Sheet Colour Switcher  0

Post Categories   Post Time 3 years, 7 months ago

Something I have always loved on other people’s websites, but never had the time to do on my own, is a style sheet switcher. I love being able to customise the colour scheme of the site I am viewing, and I think it gives it a personal touch. It is especially useful for looking back at old designs to see how a website has progressed.

With that in mind, I have been using several tutorials to create a simple colour changer for davidappleyard.org.uk, with fairly good results. You can now change the colour scheme on my site by clicking one of the link in the top right hand of this page. At the moment, the only colours available are blue and green. I’m sure that this will expand over the next few days.

For those interested, the tutorial(s) I used were:

I’ve now also written my own tutorial on how to do this, specifically for WordPress:

New Years Resolutions  3

Post Categories   Post Time 3 years, 7 months ago

Well, this isn’t something I do every 12 months, but there are a few things I would like to achieve in the new year. You can read other people’s resolutions here.

  • Give more to charity - The recent events have made me feel that this is something I really do not do enough of. I support Tear Fund from time to time, but not in the big way I should. I’ll aim to do some general giving of my earnings, and maybe at one point in the year do something big for a charity, getting sponsored for it.
  • Quality, not Quantity - At the moment, I’m the kind of person who loves to have loads of projects on the go at once. I’m going to try to move away from that, and generally focus on making the small projects I work on the best quality I can. I want to focus on offering good quality content, rather than lots of ’shells’ of websites, which are never realistically going to take off.
  • More Music - At the moment, I’m a bit insular in my music tastes. I’ve got a fairly large music collection, but I’d like to gather a wider vareity of music styles and broaden my horizons. There is a lot of music I have which I have never listened to, and I can’t continue like that.

I’m sure if I tried, I could come up with a long list of crazy resolutions which I would never keep. I’m keeping it simple, so that there is at least a remote chance of my achieving them. Lets give it a year and see how it goes! What are your resolutions?

Suprnova Announcement  0

Post Categories   Post Time 3 years, 7 months ago

I’ve been listening to the Suprnova radio station for a couple of hours, and unfortunately, so many people were trying to listen and connect that it made actually hearing a decent conversation near impossible. I believe the creator or Suprnova.org talked about the new development of the eXeem application, and the reasons for Suprnova’s closure.

Download the .mp3 file

Download the .torrent file

More information to come as soon as I’ve finished downloading one of the above. You can download a copy of the eXeem Beta (at your own risk) from this link

Death Toll Hits 114,000  0

Post Categories   Post Time 3 years, 7 months ago

More information is becoming apparent about the recent events in Asia, showing that the death toll appears to be over 114,000 people. I don’t know about you, but I find it hard to even comprehend these kind of numbers. The fact that so many people are suffering (well over 10 million will be homeless) is simply awful. It is difficult to put into words the horror and pain those affected must be feeling. On top of that, I find it strange that it wasn’t even ‘region specific’. By that I mean that it is not like, say, the Sudan crisis in that is could have taken place anywhere in the world. It makes you feel so fragile, how something so small can affect people so enormously.

I was watching the news, and saw a story about a man who had lost his wife, and four children in the Tsunami. He said that the only thing keeping him going was the fact that he had three small children to look after. He was a fisherman, and his boat, house and livelyhood had been completely destroyed. Money counts for nothing, there are no shops, people don’t know whether the shop keepers are alive or dead. One thing he mentioned was how the last thing on his mind was to report the deaths of his family members to the authorities, they will never be counted in the statistics. It makes you wonder how many more people are like this, and what the death toll really is.

It’s great to see the response people are having to this disaster though. For example, today Apple’s homepage was dedicated purely to directing visitors to donation websites where they could donate to the victims, and the governments of the countries involved. I think it is great that a company so large and corporate can do something such as that. As you would expect, the Microsoft homepage is as it always is. Not even a small button or link to donate. It’s wrong.

Even as the death toll in Asia continues to rise, the threat of an even greater tragedy looms. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières and the UN are warning that disease outbreaks could kill more people than the tsunamis themselves. But malaria is also a problem we’re learning how to fix. DDT, the chemical usually used to control mosquitoes, has dire health and environmental consequences. But while we’re still a long way off from a malaria vaccine, two other approaches are proving effective.

This is a snippet from a blog I read earlier today. It hits home about giving:

I just made a contribution to the International Response Fund of the American Red Cross. I picked a number, and then I doubled it, thinking of what is needed for relief to Darfur as well.

Thinking about it some more, I realize how stingy I am. I donated less than four times what it cost for the DVD set of the Live Aid concerts, something that I requested on my Christmas list and that I received Christmas Eve. And I’m willing to spend double to quadruple the donation I just made to take Vicki out for New Years Eve and our 9th wedding anniversary.

I just talked it over with Vicki and we chose staying home for New Years Eve, or doing something simple with friends, donating what we would have spent going out to the disaster relief effort instead. And if anyone puts together a benefit event by New Years Eve, I will consider donating to that also.

Please Give

Audio Scrobbler  0

Post Categories   Post Time 3 years, 7 months ago

Another section has been added to the menu on the right, entitled “Aural Pleasures”. I’ve written a script to integrate my site with my latest played songs on Audioscrobbler. Audioscrobbler builds a profile of your musical taste using a plugin for your media player (Winamp, iTunes, XMMS etc..). Plugins send the name of every song you play to the Audioscrobbler server, which updates your musical profile with the new song. Every person with a plugin has their own page on this site which shows their listening statistics. The system automatically matches you to people with a similar music taste, and generates personalised recommendations.

I’m using iTunes, and the plugin provided seems to be working flawlessly at the moment. I’m really impressed with the speed of the system, and the fact that it is so simple to use! If anyone is interested in the script I have written to achieve this, just click to read more, where you will find a copy of the code. Enjoy!
