Tsunami Disaster Tests Faith

Services are being held across the UK for tsunami victims, as religious leaders acknowledge the disaster could test the faith of many people. I am not surprised that many people will find it very difficult to understand how such terrible disasters can be allowed to happen, through no fault of our own.

I don’t have any answers, but I believe people should trust that even through events like this, some good can come of it. Maybe it will help us to realise how fragile we are, that we need something bigger to put our hope and trust in. Maybe it will show people that noone is safe from such disasters, that they could occur anywhere in the world. Maybe it will prepare us if the same event ever happened again.

Catholic and Anglican leaders said many would question how God could allow such disasters to happen, but said people would rely on their beliefs to cope. Thousands are expected at a Hindu service in Neasden, north London. I find it amazing how something such as this can show how everyone is united. Even people with completely different faiths and religions can all pray for help for the same problem, to the same God.

Apparently, the official death toll of Britons stands at 40, after five more deaths were confirmed by the Foreign Office on Sunday, but many more are still missing. I think we have come out of this tradgedy incredibly fortunately. Other countries including European neighbours have suffered far worse from this than we have. I suppose that is something to be thankful for.

The Archbishop of Birmingham, said:

Disasters do not wipe out faith anymore than they wipe out love.

Rather, the light of love, the light of God glows more persistently in that awful darkness.

It shines in human heroism, generosity, selflessness and courage.
