Jerry Springer Opera
The BBC aired a controversial evening of programming, dedicated to Jerry Springer last night. Personally, I don’t like the man himself, so had no intention of watching it. However, after seeing the affect it has had on the BBC (and the number of complaints about the show) I wish I had watched it to an extent.
The problem with the show was that it made a mockery of Christianity (portraying Jesus Christ as ineffective, homosexual and ridiculous). It contained large amounts of unneccesary offensive language, and was generally insulting to a large number of people.
I find it horrifying and disgraseful that a show such as this can get away with such racist remarks against Christianity. If they had been in relation to any other religion, there is no way they would ever have been allowed to air the show. I don’t know why this is. Have people lost respect for Christianity? Even if that is the case, how can anyone find mocking it entertainment?
Stephen Green, national director of Christian Voice, said:
“I find it astonishing that Mark Thompson and David Soul [the show’s star] claim they are Christians and they can see nothing wrong with Jerry Springer - The Opera.
“What kind of Christians are the sort of people who find mocking God and Jesus Christ acceptable?
“If this show portrayed Mohammed or Vishnu as homosexual, ridiculous and ineffectual, it would never have seen the light of day.”
I could not agree more. In response to the number of protestors outside the BBC headquarters last night, Vice-president Terry Sanderson said:
“This organised attack is the latest of a series of attempts by religious interests to control what we can see or say in this country.”
First of all, it wasn’t an attack. People were stood with billboards. Enough said. Secondly, saying that we are trying to control what can be shown on TV in this country it absolute bull****. It is already clear that the general public have no say over what is broadcast, as the BBC showed it anyway, even after the number of complaints. And, how is it that such a programme would never have worked if against a different faith?
I really hope the BBC will learn a lesson from this escapade, and that they will think twice before airing such a ridiculous programme again.
