Meet The Fockers

I watched the first film in this series - Meet The Parents - when it was released a couple of years ago. At the time, I thought it was relatively funny, and appreciated much of it on a superficial level. I know what you’re thinking - “but it was a superficial comedy” - and you’re right. I just found it much funnier the second time around, and seemed to connect with much more of the humour in it. It was because of this that I made it a priority to see Meet The Fockers, the second half of the series, a couple of weeks ago.

Personally, I found the sequel to the first film to be the funnier of the two. The producer (Jay Roach) has managed to break the general trend of sequels not matching the quality of the first. From the outset, the film offers the same harmless and fun comedy as the first. Robert De Niro plays the same role as in the first film, and is probably given more scope for comedy in this sequel. For a start, he has purchased a huge motorhome (which is an absolute recipe for disaster). The flight attendant from the first film makes a reappearance, albeit a brief one.

The story centres around meeting “The Fockers”, Greg’s parents. His dad is a failed lawyer, and his mother is a sex therapist for elderly people living in their area. They are as far removed as they could be from the Brynes (the other set of parents). From mishaps with a small baby, to a coachload of topless cheerleaders, this film proved to be a laugh a minute.

I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a good laugh, but who doesn’t want to have to actually think about the jokes - let’s face it, it’s very superficial.
