SimplePhotos 0.3 Beta Released

SimplePhotos PHP Gallery SimplePhotos Photo Album

I’ve had lots of requests for the next version of this freeware photo gallery script, so have added some new functionality and re-packaged version 0.3. It isn’t a huge overhaul, but does add some useful new functionality. Some of the new features include:

  • Improved thumbnail switching
  • Complete redesign, better colour scheme
  • Information bar
  • Optional description for each photo

Let me know if you use and like it, it’s always good to hear sucess stories. If, on the other hand, your story isn’t successful, get in touch with me anyway and I’ll see if it’s a general problem that needs fixing.

I like this… very much! I put the photos I like on flickr, but I put everything else up on my website as my “archive” of sorts. I used to use Gallery (and then G2 alpha), but it became more overhead than I wanted to deal with. This fits the bill almost perfectly. =)

So, a couple questions… First, is this cacheing thumbnails somewhere on the server (generating on the fly)? Or is it just relying on local internet cache to speed up next time?

Second, any way (or plans) to support nested folders in the Photos folders? If not, no biggie… I can creatively name my folders. =)

    Thanks for the great app!
    -Sean

Shaun: I’m glad you like the program. It generates the thumbnails on the fly, and as you say, rely’s on the users’s local cache to stop them being reloaded.

Nested folders would be something I’d love to support in the next version. It’s trickier than it sounds though :) I’ll add it to the ‘to do’ list for 0.4.

Any chance of a link to have a look at your setup?

Oh yeah! I meant to throw that out there: http://www.seanw.com/dev/simplegallery - That URL is subject to change of course… I throw all my “web toys” into my dev folder. :)

    Awesome David!

I just put up a real gallery a few days ago and I was using JAlbum for a short while but I didnt like it too much.

I just installed in on my server (www.patrickweber.com/album) and it is working wonderfully!

Great job, keep up the great work.

Fantastic system. I just tried it. Beautiful, simple, effective. What more could you want? Great work.

    Great work David!
But I’ve got a Warning Here.

  7. David Appleyard Says:

Thanks for all the positive feedback.

Dancemoon: I think this could be something to do with the PHP setup on your Windows server. Is it a server you own/run yourself or a shared one? If possible, you could turn off PHP warnings, so that the message is not displayed.

    Thanks:)

  9. Sujay Says:

Oh a feature request. When viewing single photos that have larger full-size views, can you have it so that clicking on the picture (resized) will link to the full-sized pic?

  10. David Appleyard Says:

At the moment, you can click ‘view original image’ in the bar across the top of the photograph. In the next version I will make sure that clicking the large image opens a new window with the full size version in. Thanks.

  11. Fringley Says:

With regards to the caching of thumbnails - i enabled this in the last version - you can do it through the phpThumb.config.php.

  12. Prospekt Says:

Yay, comments! A very welcome feature, I’ve had a number of people asking me what some of my images are and it’s been a bit of a pain. Thanking you vely much.

  13. Prospekt Says:

comments? Jet-lag + sleep deprivation makes Daniel ramble.

    I meant description, obviously.

  14. David Appleyard Says:

To add a description to an image, follow this procedure.

If you have a photo named ‘photo1.jpg’ in a folder, simply upload a text file with the following filename:

    photo1.jpg.txt

Enter the description for that image inside the file. I appreciate this isn’t necessarily the best way of adding a description, but it does work.

Remember that if your photo had a filename ending in .JPG (capitals), your text file would have to end in .JPG.txt

  15. Arman Choobineh Says:

David, I have a quick question. In my simplephotos galleries (example: http://armanchoobineh.com/images.php?action=gallery&gallery=California%20Summer%202004) it lists the photos in backwards chronological order. Is there anyway I can change this so they are listed in chronological order? Thanks.

  16. Brian Says:

    Great Software!!!!

I was wondering the same as Arman. I named the file names with 01_,02_ at the beginning in hopes of solving this but did work. Same thing happened with my folders.

Also is there a way to evenly space folder names?

Thanks for all your work and thanks in advance for the answers!
