A New Level of Intrusion

Post Categories   Post Time 3 years, 2 months ago

There was a day when adverts on a website flashed, spun and jumped to attract your attention to the product they were selling. This wasn’t a huge problem to me, cause after a while you just get used to scanning over a page to find the content you are interested in straight away. Adverts like that only really worked on people new to the Internet, or someone who was genuinely interested in the product in question.

If you’ve visited Hotscripts.com recently, you will probably have noticed the banner advertisements at the top of the page. If you’ve got your speakers turned on, they actually talk to you - speaking an advert for the product they are trying to plug. This, in my opinion, is a new level of intrusion and annoyance. No longer can you just look away, and let your eyes scan for what you are looking for. Now, you have to try to block out the sound of this talking ad!

Fine you say, just turn off your speakers. That’s a fine solution if you aren’t watching a film, or listening to some music. Then you’ve got an intermingling of whatever you are trying to watch, and the advert! I hope this doesn’t catch on, but if it does, I’ll be the first looking for a Safari add-on to disable audio in the browser.

It really has put me off visiting and using Hotscripts, which is a shame, because they are a really good database of PHP/SQL applications. I hope they come to their senses soon and revert back to the normal bearable level of advertising.

I noticed these “loud ads” on Wired.com. Some articles were briefly accompanied by a loop of that detestable frog thing.

    Quite a shame, I agree.
But nothing F5 doesn’t sort out.

I agree. The ones that really bother me are the ones on Weather.com that actually come out of their frame and have a big flash animation over the stuff I’m trying to view.

Like there was one for the hulk that actually took the contents in the firefox window and broke the whole window down the screen (well it put a little cracked image dwon it) and then it finished.. while making the hwole site useless until it was finished.

PithHelmet removed the hotscripts banners for me .. all in all its fairly good and i suddenly realise how many ads there actually are when I go back to using a mac that isnt mine :P

The first thing to go in any program is the sound for me, I can’t stand to have sound interrupting me or my music that is usually playing.

When I find an ad that plays sounds or a site that has background music (rare given my use of Proxomitron), I instantly pause my music and start the blocking process through a number of ways. This includes, adding a new rule to Proxomitron and blocking with AdBlock among other things.

Then I stop my music and play it from the beginning, nothing worse than not listening to a song in its entirety…
