Sony DSC-F717 Digital Camera

I bought a new camera yesterday, again, in preperation for some great photo opportunities in Canada later this month. I did a bit of research, but it had to be a quick purchase. I fancied a larger build camera - more like an SLR. Pretty much every Digital SLR (new or second hand) was well out of my price range, so I decided to opt for a non-SLR camera, from Sony. I’d heard good things about the DSC-F717 from friends who own it, and I could pick one up for just over £200.00 on eBay.

I got a good deal, the camera comes with a case, two 128mb memory sticks and a couple of filters. I also splashed out on a 1gb memory stick (£42, courtesty again of eBay) for storing three weeks worth of high res snaps. Everything should arrive tomorrow, so I’m looking forward to having a play with the camera and familiarising myself with it before next week.

My old camera was a sturdy Ixus V2 (2.1 mpixels), which I’ve had for years. It’s been an absolutely fantastic camera.

Many years ago, I bought a DSC-F505, which is basically the same form factor. It didn’t hold up too well over the years — its poor durability kind of soured me on Sony in fact — but it took really good pictures. It was definitely the easiest digital camera I’ve owned in terms of getting good results without having to know too much about photography. The best thing about it though was that swivel base, which allowed me to take lots of pictures on the sly, without people realizing that I was shooting. I really dug that a lot. Enjoy your F717!

So far so good. I’ve got some great shots with it, and it has some brilliant manual settings etc.

I’ll stick some images from Canada up here when I get back.
