Our Stock Works - Stock Photography Site

It’s a month since my last post, and I’ve been very busy. Most of my time has been spent working on a new project, Our Stock Works. Remember about a month ago I asked for any photographers reading the blog to contact me…?

Now is the time to unveil what it was all about. Our Stock Works is a stock photography website, offering a huge catalog of images at really good prices. It’s due to launch in a few months time, so we are now scouting for any photographers who may be interested in contributing. We are offering a 50% commission rate, which means it’s a real method to earn money from your photography - images you may just have sitting on your hard drive.

If you’re interested, simply visit the site and enter your email address into the ‘Photographers’ box. We will be in touch with more information about how to get started. Feel free to pass the word on and post about it on your blog. We may be inviting a select few people to help test the site before it launches - probably people who have shown an interest already (Mint referrer feeds are great for that!).

It uses AJAX and RSS extensively, and has been a fantastic project to work on so far. It’s great to be able to apply the latest technologies to a website. To get your taste buds tingling, here are a few exclusive shots of the site and contributor area in action:

The main website homepage

The contributor section, where photographers can upload and manage their images

Check back for updates - I’ll be keeping track of progress here.

Yep, it’s been a very busy couple of months. I’m really hoping to get the word out there now, so if any of you know any photographers or people who might be interested - pass the link on :-)

This is going to be great. I’m going to take the time and write on my blog about this and advertise for it. The more the competition, the better it is for the consumer.

I was reading this on Newsvine and caught your website from there.

It was said that … “Until now, however, there hasn’t been a real middle ground for people who are looking for images at a price somewhere in between hundreds of dollars, and a few cents.” Do you have any idea about how much the average photo would cost? Would it be a credit-based system?

    Hope this goes far!

Thanks Mark - Drop me a comment when you’ve made a post and I’ll link back to it.

Pricing will probably range from ¬£15 to ¬£30 for an image (depending on quality, resolution etc). We’re not planning a credit system at first - it will be a straightforward checkout cart service. What are your thoughts on that?

  6. Daniel Says:

well it looks like we’re commenting on each others blogs ;)
    15 - 30 quid? That’s rather cheap. Companies are willing to pay a lot more…‚Ǩ 100 - 250, just not ‚Ǩ 500+ like Getty is asking.
Remember, the incentive for the photographer is rather low too, with prices like 15 quid.

    Credit card sounds good.

I hold my fingers crossed and hope that you guys will be a great alternative for monopolist-wannabes like Getty.

Credit card system sounds nice. I wrote a post on my blog and made a few banners to help spread the word. They’re not the best, but I thought I’d help out a little.

  8. David Appleyard Says:

Thanks Mark, that’s fantastic. I’ll mention it in the next Our Stock article.

Since when was ?âire part of the UK?

  10. David Appleyard Says:

Maybe that should be altered to Great Britian. Thanks for pointing it out.

  11. Patrick Nesbitt Says:

Not part of Great Britain either! You should remove the flag from the map and change the title to UK & Ireland. Nice design though.

  12. Patrick Weber Says:

    I’m signed up!

Is this only for people in the UK?

  13. David Appleyard Says:

It’s an international project, for photographers and designers across the world. Thanks for showing your interest.

    Hey Dave,

Just browsing your blog and wanted to say best of luck with this project. Sounds really interesting and has the potential to be really successful.

    Good luck with the launch!

PS: We’re long overdue a game of squash, so next time I’m in the Fax we’re going head to head! :-)
